Here we go again. More BMW crap. Ya know, there are adventure bikes out there besides BMW. Vastly better and more reliable ones too. LOL I think that comment is highly subject to opinion. What a pig. So maybe if your idea of adventure riding is sticking to hard packed roads and asphalt, the GS is the best adventure bike on the market? This is great write up and actually consistent with my research. Both are great bikes and I tested the competitions and narrow the decision to the GS.
Yes, it does not have the most HP I think it got great torque. Yes, it is not the most nice looking motorcycle out three but it is in my opinion the inspiration and the superior to all other. The newer GS will be even better. Have a nice day. I think this is an excellent article. I am now getting the GS with a number of rallye options including upgraded suspension, bigger screen and GS seat comfy seat.
I see it as the best of both worlds and BMW allows quite of bit in the option selection if you have a knowledgeable dealer. I carry a camel tank for more gas and Jesse luggage and will come in at the ADV price, give or take. My wife chose the African twin which she felt was better than the GS. It really depends on your mission and personal preference. It is so great having so many choices. My gs has miles on it and has never broke down once.
I ride several times a week every thing from church to the brewery and never been robbed either. Been to Alaska half a dozen times too hmm no trouble. Get over your jealousy. Best bike on the planet. These are by far the best most practical off road bike around.
Africa twin is probably second. Sounds like you need to blame your parents for making you too short. Which makes it the best all-round in the whole spectrum. Just saying- been to 47 different countries under the belt. Your about the same size as me and I ride my rgs on dirt roads and trails all over the sierras with no problem. Not near as top heavy as my dl or super tenere.. The seat height is no problem. Pingback: To Adventure Or Not.
That Is The Question. If you Think in off road you have to Think in a cc like susuki Dr or Klr or a tenere. If your idea is a the better decision price vs reability confort quality is super tenere, you only Think in gas brake pads oil and tires, its the best choice. Think Suzuki DR with larger tank, better seat, small windshield, engine guards, etc.
Or you make the trip like this 70 year old woman and do it on a cc. There is nothing better than my GSA. It does it all. Second to none. Will not drive any other motorcycle. This generation of GS really does handle surprisingly well and has an excellent level of build quality and very good reliability. The older air-cooled GS may lack some of the latest technology such as power modes or semi-active suspension, but the important things such as ABS and traction control were fitted to this generation and to be honest, they are all you really need.
Most BMWs come with a full service history, so be cautious if there are any large gaps. There is a cover on the front of the boxer engine that has some sound-deadening foam insulation behind it, which drives owners wild. The foam absorbs water, allowing corrosion to set in and the paint to flake off. Loads of owners simply remove the foam. As the GS is a tall bike, low speed damage is common, so check the any engine protection bars for scrapes and also that the bars are straight.
BMW sold a huge array of extras for the GS, so if you want a bike for commuting and require panniers or a top box, buy one with them already fitted as it is far cheaper than trying to source the items afterwards. You can remove it and use an aftermarket shock, but there will be an ESA warning light illuminated on the dash. The most significant update to the air-cooled RGS happened in when the boxer motor gained a new twin-cam head.
If you are into big adventures, you may also be tempted by the RGS Adventure, which added a huge litre tank and long travel suspension to the party. The Rallye is the off-road biased version of the RGS and comes with sporty upgrades to the pegs, seat, screen and wheels.
You also get automatic stability control ASC , radiator and frame guards and knobbly tyres. BMW have improved on perfection, and made their flagship GS smoother and more refined than ever. The Rallye version takes the fear out of off-roading and bridges the gap between the standard GS and the big Adventure. Previously you could change the damping on the move to soft, medium and hard but now the damping is adjusted automatically, adapting to your riding by reading numerous sensors such as lean angle, brake pressure, speed, pitch and more.
In basic terms the ESA is always re-adjusting automatically and keeping the bike level. Brake heavily into a turn and it will increase damping at the front; accelerate hard and it will increase damping on the rear. Over bumps and imperfections, the ride is truly impressive.
You have two choices: the standard road version or the off-road version, which means opting for off-road biased rubber.
